Garrett offers lackluster support for Sussex & Warren citizens affected by PSE & G Susquehanna-Roseland project while receiving significant campaign contributions from PSE & G

Haworth, NJ: The Shulman for Congress campaign notes with concern that the citizens of Sussex and Warren County have had inadequate input into PSE & G’s choice of routes for their new power lines. PSE & G is a consistent donor to Scott Garrett’s campaigns, having contributed $5,000 over the past five years, including a well-timed contribution in May, 2008.

“Citizen participation in key decisions is critical to our democracy,” said Dennis Shulman, the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District. “Citizen input into this critical decision was too little, too late, and seemingly not taken too seriously by PSE & G. It is the job of our elected officials, be they Democratic or Republican, to ensure citizen participation, and I pledge to do better for this district if elected in November.”

“I am not sure whether Garrett’s main priority is standing with his constituents or standing with his hand out waiting for his next campaign contribution from PSE & G,” said Jeff Hauser, Shulman’s campaign manager. “Garrett has reported receiving five significant financial contributions from PSE & G, including as recently as May – has he received more during the past five weeks? We need a member of Congress who will do more than offer up vague words of support for citizen participation – the citizens of Sussex and Warren are entitled to results and a process that takes their input seriously. Dennis will be the type of Congressman who makes sure that happens.”

Garrett sits on the housing subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee while his chief of staff is a former lobbyist for the disgraced housing lender Countrywide Financial.

Dennis Shulman was recently profiled by The New Yorker and Time as momentum for his campaign continues to grow, and recent polling in the district validates the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s recent decision to upgrade NJ-5 as an “Emerging Race.” Only 31% of likely voters in NJ-5 plan to re-elect Garrett and, by a 68-17% margin, the district seeks change from George Bush’s policies.

Dr. Dennis Shulman has gained international recognition for his 30 years of work as a psychologist, educator, and author. An ordained rabbi for five years and blind since childhood, he has lived in New Jersey’s Fifth District for more than 25 years with his wife, Dr. Pamela Tropper, an obstetrician. They have two adult daughters.
