Congressional hopeful Dennis Shulman’s first television ad of the general election season hammers U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Warren, for designating part of his property as farmland, which lowers his property tax burden.

In the ad, Shulman, a Democrat, cites a news report from 2002 in which the Garrett campaign said the congressman’s brother grew Christmas trees on the land and earned $700 a year.

“Rather than put forth meaningful proposals, Dennis Shulman has regurgitated baseless and untrue accusations,” Garrett campaign manager Amanda Gasperino said in an e-mail. “The attack is old news and another misleading distraction by the Shulman camp.”

Gasperino said residents deserve policy proposals, not “unfounded political gimmicks,” and she said Shulman is attacking open space. Gasperino did not respond to follow-up questions to identify which statements she deems untrue.

Shulman campaign manager Jeff Hauser said Garrett looks out for his own interests, not the district’s.

“He’s not a farmer,” Shulman’s ad says. “Just another corrupt politician.”

Election Day is Nov. 4.

In New Jersey, the last day to register to vote is Oct. 14.
