WHAT: After months of backing out of numerous debates, career politician Scott Garrett has finally agreed to face off with Dennis Shulman, the community leader who is challenging him for New Jersey’s Fifth District congressional seat. This campaign, once written off as unwinnable, is now regarded as among the most competitive in the country. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee just upgraded the race to their elite “Red to Blue” status. The DCCC’s decision, following recent polling, fundraising, and the growing cloud of scandal around E. Scott Garrett, indicates that this race is highly winnable and a top priority for the national party. Shulman will debate Garrett at Temple Emanuel in Woodcliff Lake and at Sussex Community College, as well as on WRNJ Radio.

Dennis Shulman was recently profiled by The New Yorker and Time as momentum for his campaign continues to grow, and recent polling in the district validates the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s decision to upgrade NJ-5 as a “Red to Blue” priority and to buy advertising time in the district. Only 31% of likely voters in NJ-5 plan to re-elect Garrett and, by a 68-17% margin, the district seeks change from George Bush’s policies.
