Gives Campaign’s closing argument, focusing on economy, as DCCC Chairman and NJ Congressmen join him on the stump

Paramus, NJ – With 103 hours left before the polls close, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) joined Congressmen Frank Pallone (NJ-6-Long Branch), Bill Pascrell (NJ-8-Passaic), and Steve Rothman (NJ-9-Fair Lawn), to rally in support of Democratic nominee Dennis Shulman’s campaign for New Jersey’s Fifth District Congressional seat. Shulman was recently upgraded to the DCCC’s prestigious “Red to Blue” program and is considered a top national priority for the party, as recent polling, fundraising, and grassroots energy indicate that Scott Garrett is exceptionally vulnerable. Van Hollen announced an additional $85,000 in funds from the DCCC on behalf of the Shulman campaign.

“In Garrett, you’ve got an incumbent from this district who has been right there with Bush…he’s Bush on steroids,” said Van Hollen. “There are some campaigns that peak too early and some that peak too late. The Shulman campaign is hitting its stride right on time and we are wiring another $85,000 so we can continue to get Dennis’ message out. This is about taking our country to a better place. This community and this country need Dennis Shulman in the U.S. Congress.”

Also today, the Bergen Record joined the nation’s most prominent Independent, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, and the New York Times in endorsing Shulman’s campaign for change.

In his closing argument, Shulman laid out his plan to dig us out of the ditch that Garrett’s anti-regulation and pro-special interest policies have created:

“With the news that the economy grew smaller last quarter as major Garrett contributor Exxon-Mobile set yet another profits record, I have a three point plan to address the overall economic crisis. By (1) focusing on re-regulation of the financial services sector, (2) investing in jobs and infrastructure through a green economic stimulus plan, and (3) assisting state and local governments in balancing their budgets, we can repair our economy and ensure a smart, safe, and strong America.”

Pascrell echoed Shulman’s remarks: “Dennis understands that we’re in the middle of an economic crisis and now is the time to take action for American families and not adhere to a political ideology. We must elect a representative who will remove the roadblocks to prosperity. You can’t work with Scott Garrett. He’s out to lunch. It’s dinner time, Scotty, come in!”

“We think of Garrett as Dr. No,” said Pallone. “He doesn’t really believe in government. He doesn’t think that government has a role in helping people in a significant way.”

“Scott Garrett’s views do not represent the values of the moderate Republicans, Independents and Democrats in the Fifth,” said Rothman. “Dennis’ candidacy has resonated across the district and the message is clear. Why do you think that the DCCC decided to invest all this money? It’s because they know Dennis can and will win!”

IBEW Local 164 Business Manager Buzzy Dressel also spoke passionately about how Shulman will represent the working people of New Jersey, in sharp contrast to Scott Garrett.
